At the core of any meaningful service initiative are the capabilities, enthusiasm and passion of the participants. Therefore, supporting the grass roots initiatives of our employees has been an essential part of Helmer Scientific’s corporate citizenship strategy. When designing the company’s generosity mission, we committed to use our resources to engage our people at their highest level of capability to provide aid and justice for the poor and vulnerable groups in our communities, as well as in other parts of the world.

In 2015, the Helmer Generosity Steering Team made the decision to leverage our dynamic and solid volunteer program, which was earlier recognized with the Indiana Governor’s Service Award for Corporate Service and the United Way of Central Indiana’s Corporate Employee Volunteer Program of the Year Award. With the intent to maximize our impact, Helmer Scientific entered the Super Service Challenge, a nationwide movement to transform business through service.

As a result, in 2015 our employees served 13 nonprofits of their choice, entered videos of their volunteer projects for the Super Service Challenge and won a total of $8,500 to benefit people in need that they truly cared about.

Projects that received monetary awards included: Children with Hair Loss - $3,000; Horizons at St Richard’s School - $1,000;Prevail Inc. - $1,000; Alternatives Inc. - $500; Dayspring Center -$500; Good Samaritan Network - $500; Keep Noblesville Beautiful - $500; PrimeLife Enrichment Center - $500; Stilts Spirit – A Giving Tree - $500; and Mission to Ukraine - $500

“I did not expect to win at all, yet alone a $3,000 check! Shocked is what I am,’ commented Marianne Howard, a Senior Staff Accountant at Helmer Scientific, who led the initiative to support Children with Hair Loss. “This gift is significant for children who suffer from medically related hair loss and cannot afford human hair replacements.”

After the challenge, Helmer volunteers commented on the highlights of the initiative:

“I loved the fact that the employees got to choose their favorite nonprofit to serve and receive a grant for.”

“We were able to help in our area of expertise. I feel we made a difference.”

“It simply gave me a deeper perspective that any difficulties in my life often don't even compare to the real troubles or pain that others face on a daily basis.”

Mindy Perry, a Project Manager at Helmer Scientific, who led the initiative to support Dayspring Center, shared, “I love volunteering and helping others. I loved that so many stepped out of their comfort zone and helped. I got to know others in the company and experience the true culture at Helmer.” These words summarize why Helmer Scientific will continue standing behind our passionate volunteers and spreading the culture of generosity!

Thanks to Helmer charitable contributions, matching gifts totaling $13,250 have been distributed to all thirteen nonprofits initiated and served by our employees. A total of $35,250 has been distributed through the Helmer Super Service Challenge. What a success story of multiple lives and communities impacted because of caring Helmer employees!
